Through its support of local, national and international artists, Artocracy seeks to bridge the ?funding gap? resulting from cuts in government funding for the arts. Many artists must hold several jobs to support themselves, and they do not have access to affordable healthcare or retirement benefits. In fact, a study from the Urban Institute likens most artists to the working poor; most artists are not employed as full-time artists, and do not derive substantial earnings from their artwork. They have multiple jobs and earn less than other professionals with comparable education and experience. By offering fair compensation and wide-reaching international exposure for artists, Artocracy strives to empower artists and support them through the sale of their work.
